Austria’s national ski tour to Obertraun or Hallstatt
Enjoy a different world high above the clouds when crossing the Dachstein glacier. The Dachstein glacier crossing ski route is also called Austria’s national ski tour. Starting point is at the mountain station of the Dachstein cable car at 2700 meters. The ski tour leads over the wide Dachstein plateau to Obertraun in Upper Austria. It is 25 km long and groomed. From the mountain station you follow the wide track, past the Schladminger lift, down to the Dirndlkolk. Now around 100 meters uphill in the direction of the Dachsteinwarte. Here follows the turnoff in the direction of the Simonyhütte to the Gjaidalm.
You drive through the transition from the high mountains to the high alpine region, the Dachsteinalm (formerly Schilcherhaus, 1,739 m) on the Gjaidalm. A short lift (free for ski tourers) facilitates access to the downhill run to Obertraun or Hallstatt. A groomed downhill run leads via Krippenbrunn to the valley station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun.
You can also cross the Dachstein glacier on alpine skis, with short carrying or skating sections. When the snow and avalanche conditions are favorable, freeriders will find plenty of opportunities on the Dachstein to carve their turns in the deep snow away from the prepared path to Hallstatt. There are places to stop for refreshments at the Simonyhütte or the Gjaidalm and offer the finest in glacier sun enjoyment.
