Hike through the “GATE”

Promising alpine hike along the Dachstein south face

To hike through the gate, take the hiking bus to the Dachstein cable car valley station. From here you hike along a narrow hiking trail to the Südwandhütte at 1,910 meters. On the Pernerweg (path no. 615), this leads along the 800 meter south face of the Dachstein to Filzmoos and on to Gosau. Salt carriers smuggled Luther Bibles from Gosau via the Bible Trail to Ramsau am Dachstein, which is why the trail is still called the “Bible Trail” today. A hike full of scenic beauty at high altitude in the Alps.

This is followed by a 30-minute ascent to the “gate” at 2,033 meters, which is bounded by Raucheck and the Torstein and presents itself as a natural incision (gate). From here you have an impressive view of the Dachstein south walls, the Bischofsmütze, the chamois area as well as the Alm area and the Tauern in the south.

After a rest and an easy descent, you continue hiking through the “Schnittlauchboden” (wildly growing, strongly fragrant chives) to the Bachlalm, which invites you to stop off. You can even feed and watch marmots near the hut. After another slight descent you come to the crossroads in the direction of Maralmboden path no. 671. Way back variant via Neustattalm and Walcheralm or via the forest road in the direction of the Dachsteinruhe bus stop. The hiking bus takes you back to the hotel.

Hiking time aprox. 5 hours

Altitude: aprox. 660 meters
